Saturday 9th October 2010 - Invitation Cup Round One versus Boley Park
Saturday 9th October saw the U10s Swifts travel to Lichfield for the first round of the Invitation Cup away to Boley Park U10s.
The game started brightly and with Travis absent the Swifts lined up with Corey in goal, Tom (capt.) and Tommy at the back with Danny in midfield and Lewis, Jack and Ollie helping out and pressing forward at every opportunity and Harvey poised to get into the fray when the opportunity arose.
The Swifts got off to a dream start with some slick passing and a brilliant run and cross from Ollie ending with Jack confidently putting the ball past a helpless goalkeeper for the first goal. There then followed some fine football with some good passing and timely interceptions from the Swifts when an unbelievably poor refereeing decision rocked the Swifts. With Boley struggling to come to terms with the endeavour and commitment of the Swifts, a Boley player clearly put the ball over the touch line out for a Polesworth throw. As a Polesworth player retrieved the ball to take the throw in the referee judged all of the ball had not crossed the line and whistled for a free kick. Caught on the hop and with Swifts players positioning themselves for the throw Boley were allowed to take a quick free kick which caught the defence out of position and the ball reached a Boley forward who wasted no time in rifling the ball past a bemused Cory.
The equaliser scored in such a controversial fashion took the wind out of the Swifts sails for a short while and allowed the free passing Boley forwards to begin to get on top.
The Polesworth team continued to play football and defended resolutely but Boley now had a whiff of victory.
In the second half after a good passing movement a great shot from the Boley front man from distance sailed past Cory for what proved to be the winning goal.
I truly believe we have the players now to beat last year's champions and we get the chance in 3 weeks time when we travel away to Boley again in the league this time and I'm sure the result will be reversed.
Saturday 16th October 2010 Versus Stonydelph
The fixtured game against Stoneydelph was cancelled as we had requested a stand down (which was the first we have ever requested since joining the Tamworth Junior League). I went off to Stoneydelph to watch Cameron captain his 3 man Wilnecote Wanderers Inter U'9s team - Oh dear!!!
Saturday 23rd October away to Wood End Tigers.
With no game last week the U'10s Swifts went into this game sharing top spot in the league with both Amington Juniors and Boley Park so a win today was important as they both were playing teams we had beaten earlier in the season.
With Tom away on a half term trip to Devon, Danny was only to pleased to put on the captain's arm band and the Swifts lined up with Tommy anchoring the defence in front of Cory with Danny, Travis, Ollie and Harvey filling the midfield in our newer 1-4-1 diamond formation with Jack given responsibility to forage upfront. With both Travis and Danny able to defend or attack as the situation arises this formation could do well especially against the likes of Boley and Amington when we need to defend well but be aware of goalscoring possibilities when we break out.
The Swifts were quickly into their stride and were obviously determined to put the disappointment of last week's cup defeat by Boley Park behind them as a corner on the right was swung over by Travis and Jack was able to connect with a sweet left foot shot passed the bemused Wood End goalkeeper.
It was now becoming all Polesworth as we pressed forward in search of the second goal that would put us on the road to certain victory. This time it was Jack's chance to turn provider with a through ball to Ollie who gratefully accepted the chance to side foot the ball into the Tiger's net.
The Swifts continued to press forward and with Tommy and Travis protecting Cory well there was only a couple of times during the first half that Cory was called into action but his usual safe handling and concentration ensured Wood End's efforts failed to get past him. The half time whistle blew with the Swifts still ahead by 2 goals to nil and another clean sheet looked on the cards.
The second half opened with a mazy run from Jack who seemed to have shaken off his earlier bout of sickness and his run ended with a fine shot into the corner of the net for his second and Polesworth's third. Jack could now sense the hat trick that he had promised me before the game and he was presented with it from a poor back pass which Jack got to well before the goalkeeper could react and pushed it wide of the advancing keeper for the 4th goal and his well deserved hat trick.
Time for Lewis to come on in place of Jack who appeared to be a bit out of puff from having chased everything and towards the end of the game Danny wrapped up a fine footballing move after some excellent passing which left him able to dribble round the remaining defender to score the 5th goal.
These Swifts are certainly improving with each game due to the coaching and guidance from Mark and Gary (the Cloughy & Taylor of Junior soccer) who seem to have the knack of preparing the lads well for each game. Next week it's Boley Park in the league and a great chance to leapfrog over them in the race for the league title.
I'll be there, and my other Grandson Cameron will just have to understand that this match against Boley is an important game and I'll return to support Wllnecote Wanderers U'8s the following week - possibly!
Saturday 30th October away to Boley Park
Football matches that end up as no score draws are variously described as dull, dour, boring or uninspiring or even all of these, but not when the game involves these U'10s polesworth Swifts.
This match was full of excitement, end to end football, good passing movements, determined defending and sheer hard work and team effort from both sides.
The Swfts lined up with Cory in goal, Tom & Tommy in defence, Danny, Travis and Ollie in midfield and Jack as the striker. Lewis was held back as the 8th man ready to take over when necessary.
Polesworth were first to attack aiming to get off to the same sort of start as in the invitation cup game against this opposition, when an early Swifts' goal rocked this Boley team that time. Chances this time around however were fewer on the ground and even with the non stop endeavour from every player, relatively few penetrating balls and crosses were finding a Polesworth player unmarked and in a position to capitalise on them. Consequently after a half of end to end play with Tom & Tommy outstanding and as mean as ever in allowing Boley Players a glimpse of the goal, we ended the half equal at 0 - 0.
The second half began with Lewis on for Travis as a fresh pair of legs to try and overcome the deadlock. Polesworth had two half chances during the half and a fine shot from distance by the Boley No. 8 rattled the Swifts crossbar, but that was the last chance they had and with Cory, Tommy & Tom resolute in defence, fiercely protective of that miserly 1 goal against league record and with Danny chasing everything in midfield attempting to create something for the ever willing Ollie, Jack and Lewis the game finished with honours even with no goals scored by either side.
Those of us fortunate to have watched this game were left with a buzz of excitement, if not disappointment that the game was over so soon. I felt a great feeling of satisfaction over being there to witness this thoroughly enjoyable and competitive match and I personally felt that these U'10s Swifts had finally shown they are a match for any team at this level. This team has progressed so much as a unit and the difference between the standard they have now achieved and from when I first watched them as u'8s when they were a group of individuals all wanting a kick of the ball is there for all to see.
The Man of the Match award went deservedly to Danny for his non stop efforts to try and set up the one chance that would surely have taken all three points. But truly there were 8 man of the matches this day.
